An Expression of Interest (EOI) must be submitted before applying for admission. If your EOI is accepted, the faculty will request that you submit a full application. A minimum of three months before the start of the semester you intend to start, applications must be filed. If your application is received after this time or after the deadline for accepting an offer, you will be considered for the subsequent semester.

Citizens of Australia and New Zealand, Australian permanent residents, and holders of permanent humanitarian visas are highly urged to submit an online application for admission no later than two weeks before the start of the course and intake (teaching period) in question. This will give your application adequate time to be processed.

Application through the online application portal is encouraged for at least two months before the start of the semester for international students. This guarantees that there will be enough time to process the application and subsequently plan for things like a student visa, lodging, and travel to Australia.  Late applications will be taken into consideration on an individual basis; if an application needs to be deferred to a later intake, applicants will be informed at the time of submitting their application for admission.

Applications for admission if credit (advanced standing) is also sought should be submitted no later than six weeks before the start of classes to give the faculty of your chosen course enough time to evaluate the credit request.

Teaching periods/University of Canberra semester dates 2025-2026

Universities have different academic calendars and school years than secondary schools, colleges, and other universities. The academic year is divided into several segments at universities. There are teaching periods and non-teaching periods, during which you will have a break. Teaching periods are when classes are held.
Understanding the UC academic calendar can help you plan your year and understand when and how your courses are provided. Four standard teaching times are included in the UC academic calendar:

• Semester 1 – which runs from February to May
• Semester 2 – which runs from August to November
• Winter Term – a shorter intensive term that runs from June to July
• Summer Semester – a shorter intensive semester that runs from December to January.

Winter Term and Summer Semesters are optional, but Semesters 1 and 2 are required for instruction. Not all units are offered during the four teaching sessions, it should be noted. They also provide several extra teaching sessions that are exclusive to a course or unit.

Each class period consists of the following:

• Orientation is the time before classes begin each semester when you can learn more about UC.
• The census date is the day that, a few weeks into a teaching term, you start to be held financially responsible for a unit. After this date, you won’t be able to add a new unit, leave a unit without paying a fee, or finish other duties associated with your fees such as filing HELP-loan paperwork.
• Exam period: There are no classes at this time since exams are scheduled.

Classes are suspended for a brief amount of time during the first, second, and summer semesters. This is referred to as a “teaching period break” or “mid-semester break.”
