Postgraduate Research Programmes:
To apply for these courses, you need to hold a 2.1 honors degree or approved equivalent relating to your area of study. Contact the relevant research coordinator to discuss the specialism and nature of the research you wish to undertake. Following this, if everything appears to be fine, you will need to complete an application form and send it to the person specified on the form. All applicants will be required to take part in an interview before offers are made. The following are the courses offered:
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
- The MPhil is awarded to a candidate who, having critically investigated and evaluated an approved topic and demonstrated an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field, has presented and defended a thesis by oral examination.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Innovation
- The MPhil (Innovation) is a unique approach to developing new ideas for potential commercialization. It has been developed following collaborative work between various faculties specializing in arts, media, education, business, and creative technologies and the Institute of Materials Research and Innovation. The qualification will be of relevance if you have a personal research interest if you are working in a research and development role in one of these fields, or in a sector where these different disciplines overlap.
LLM by Research

- The LLM by Research is a specialist MPhil route and the program is governed by the same Postgraduate Research Regulations. Applications are made on the PGR Application form for all MPhil degrees.
- The LLM by Research is an excellent opportunity to focus on a period of dedicated research, which is an ideal preparation for doctoral study or for those seeking to enhance their career prospects within the legal profession. This will involve consolidating and building on the legal research and writing skills acquired during previous legal studies, through the planning and completion of a dissertation of up to 40,000 words. You will be working independently, yet under the supervision of academic specialists within your chosen field of law or legal philosophy.

University of Bolton Postgraduate Research Application Requirements 2025/2026
To apply for postgraduate Research courses you need to have the following requirements:

Upper second-class honors degree (2:1) in a relevant subject; we welcome equivalent qualifications from overseas and the EU (see UK NARIC for information on recognized equivalencies)

If English is not your first language, you will also normally need to obtain an IELTS certificate with a minimum overall score of 6.5 within the last 2 years and no individual component score below 6.0. This must be completed at an IELTS test center authorized by UKVI to run IELTS tests for UK visa and immigration purposes.

For PhD programs, a postgraduate qualification and/or some research training or relevant professional development is desirable.

The process below will guide you to apply directly to Bolton University for a postgraduate course:
1. Choose a course or subject and call Bolton University on 0808 281 1111:
- Please take a look at the courses available through a clearing before calling – you can only apply for one course at a time through clearing so this can save you a lot of time!
2. Find out if Bolton University can offer you a place:
- When you call the Clearing hotline, the university will go through a few questions to determine your eligibility, you may receive a verbal offer of a place over the phone meaning they’re confident that you meet the academic requirements of the course.
3. Submit your fully completed application form:
- Shortly after receiving your verbal offer, you will receive an email explaining how you can make an application please complete this as fully as possible and submit it along with any supporting documents you have.
4. Find out more about the University of Bolton:
- Bolton University will be holding two dedicated open events, a Course Advice Day on Wednesday 11 August, and an Open Day on Saturday 14 August for you to visit the campus and find out more about where you will be studying in September.
