The admissions process for fall 2025 is currently open. The application deadline for all undergraduate programs in the following faculties is March 1, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. MDT (unless otherwise stated). There are three basic steps to applying for a graduate degree at UAlberta. As early as a year before you want to start your program of study, you should start the procedure.

Depending on the program you’re interested in, different deadlines apply; some are as early as a year in advance. International students should apply as soon as possible because they must do so to be considered for a Study Permit, the processing of which can take up to six months and is dependent upon the country. Application Notes

For all Programs: If core courses are not offered during the first year of your degree, please be ready to take electives.

Admission decisions: After the application deadline, it may take two to three months for the review process to be finished.

*International Applicants: International students will require time to get their study visa and travel to Canada after an admissions decision is announced. International candidates for the M.Ed. program are STRONGLY encouraged to apply for admission to the Fall semester.

University of Alberta Application Deadlines

Admissions for the M.Ed. program have two deadlines: October 1 and March 1. The application deadline for the doctorate program (EdD, Ph.D.) is December 1st.

Four academic periods make up the academic year, which runs from September to August. There are four entrance dates for the master’s program.
There is just one entrance date for the doctoral program.

University of Alberta Application Fee

You must pay an application fee of either CAD $75 (for repeat applicants to the University of Alberta) or CAD $125 (for new applicants) (for current or previous University of Alberta students).
There is no reimbursement for this application cost.

University of Alberta Admission Requirements

All undergraduate admissions at the University of Alberta are competitive and based on space availability.

You must fulfill both the general requirements and the requirements particular to your desired program(s) to be considered for admission.

Course Requirements

Five specific Grade 12 topics, which vary by program but always include English 30-1, are prerequisites for all undergraduate programs that provide direct entry from high school (or the equivalent in your province).

English Language Proficiency

To be considered for admission, all undergraduate applicants must have a sufficient level of English Language Proficiency (ELP).
Spoken English Proficiency (SEP) may also be necessary for some circumstances.
(French Language Proficiency is required for French-language programs.)

The majority of Canadian candidates will automatically satisfy the ELP criterion if they have completed at least three years of full-time English-language schooling in Canada.
If not, there are several ways to prove ELP, including TOEFL and IELTS exam results.

Other Requirements

A portfolio, an audition, or a written statement are some of the additional prerequisites for some programs.
