University of Brighton Undergraduate Application Requirements 2023/2024

The University of Brighton is committed to enabling as many people as possible to take advantage of higher education and operates a flexible admissions policy where applications are considered on merit. You should also make sure that you meet any subject-specific requirements by using the course finder. Below are the admission entry requirements for undergraduate courses offered at Brighton University:

The UCAS tariff:

  • The UCAS tariff is a points system that translates different types of qualifications into one format, so that different types and volumes of achievement can be compared. It enables admissions tutors to take into account the breadth of qualifications. UCAS tariff points obtained from Level 3 Key Skills will count towards an offer for most of our courses.
  • BU does not accept Level 2 Key Skills in numeracy and literacy for entry to our courses in place of GCSEs. Although they are pitched at the same level as GCSE grades A-C on the national qualifications framework, they do not cover the full breadth of knowledge demanded by GCSEs.

BTEC Diploma qualifications:

  • The entry requirements for BTEC Qualifications vary depending on the course. An offer for a place on a course may require a particular combination of grades such as Merit or Distinction and this may include a specified subject such as health or art and design
  • At Brighton, they welcome applicants studying BTEC National Diploma courses. They have recognised that BTEC Diploma qualifications provide students with the essential study skills and subject knowledge required to successfully progress onto degree courses.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma:

  • BU welcomes applications from students studying for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The breadth and depth of study afforded by the qualification are excellent preparation for studying for a degree in higher education.
  • The opportunity to complete an extended essay provides a good foundation for the independent study and research elements of your degree. Entry requirements for each course can be found on the course finder. For some courses, BU will consider applicants with standalone components of the IB course, such as three Higher-level Diploma subjects.

T-level:

A typical offer from Brighton University will be to achieve a Merit as this is the closest match to the standard entry requirement. One T-level is the same size as three full A-levels. You may be awarded any of these grades:

  • Distinction* (equivalent to A*A*A* / 168 UCAS tariff points)
  • Distinction (AAA /144 UCAS tariff points)
  • Merit (BBB / 120U CAS tariff points)
  • Pass with C or higher in your core component (CCC / 96UCAS tariff points)
  • Pass with D or E in your core component (DDD / 72 UCAS tariff points).

GCSE equivalency tests:

  • If you do not have GCSEs and the course you are interested in has a mandatory GCSE requirement, BU accepts Functional Skills instead as long as they are passed at Level 2. This is considered comparable to a GCSE at grade C/4.

English language requirements:

  • Courses offered at Brighton University are delivered and assessed in English. The UK Home Office requires prospective students who have not studied and been examined in English to meet their English language requirements for your chosen course.
  • You will also need to provide evidence that you have met the language requirement through a secure English language test (ELT) with an approved test provider.
  • This evidence is required before you can be issued a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies or CAS number.

University of Brighton Postgraduate Application Requirements 2023/2024

Masters-level degree courses typically require a first degree. However, if you don’t hold this qualification but can demonstrate an equivalent level of experience, BU will consider your application on the basis of your potential to benefit from, and contribute to, a course.

Credit accumulation and transfer scheme (CATS):

  • Brighton University operates a credit accumulation and transfer scheme. This scheme means that you can study at different UK or international universities for part of your degree.
  • For every postgraduate module that you pass at the University of Brighton, you receive a certain number of points. Most standard postgraduate modules have a value of 10 points.

English language requirements:

For postgraduate study, you need to have a good to ‘fully operational command of the language in most situations.

You can meet the English language requirements in two ways.

  • By demonstrating your ability to study and be examined in English through your previous academic record.
  • By providing certificated proof of having recently passed one of the English language qualifications listed below.
  • IELTS,
  • Cambridge,
  • PTE Academic,
  • Trinity and TOEFL iBT.

English Entry Requirements for International Students:

The courses are taught and assessed in English. The UK Visa and Immigration Authority and the university will need you to meet their English language requirements for your chosen course in order to be granted a student visa. Below is the list of the English entry requirements needed from international applicants:

  • English language, English literature, or English language and literature A-levels at grade D or above.
  • English courses from other UK universities, subject to subject to being awarded from an accredited institution and at the CEFR B2 minimum levels required and meeting all four components.
