Your tuition costs will vary depending on your educational level as well as elements like if you are an overseas student, getting Commonwealth aid, or only attending classes part-time. The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) will also be required of the majority of students. Other students may have a variety of alternatives for fee payment or deferral, while some students may be required to pay their tuition in full upfront.

The main fee you will pay to the university is tuition, which covers the cost of teaching. When they accept an invitation to study at the University of Newcastle, international students pay a deposit fee. The Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) portion of the deposit will be paid first, and the remaining funds will be applied to the first term’s tuition and the Student Services Amenities Fee (SSAF).

Each student’s tuition fee varies depending on their program of study, degree of study, and specific courses they choose to enrol in. It’s possible that the deposit won’t cover all of your first term’s fees. If you have a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), the Australian government will pay for your university education.

Student Services and Amenities Fee

To help pay for the extracurricular student activities and facilities that are provided to University students, all students are required to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

As part of the enrolment process, students who choose to use the SA-HELP loan option to postpone payment of their SSAF must fill out a separate electronic Commonwealth aid form (eCAF).

You will be required to pay the money upfront if the form is not turned in by the census date. The websites for Study Assist and Students Services and Amenities Fee have more details about SSAF.

How to apply University of Newcastle 2025

This page contains information for prospective students. Please review the information on internal transfers if you are currently enrolled at the University of Newcastle. Alternatively, please click here if you are a current student at Open Foundation, Newstep, or Yapug. Each year, there are two major intakes for undergraduate programs:

  • All undergraduate schools’ first semester, which typically begins in February or March of each year, is the main admissions period.
  • In Semester 2, fewer programs are available for admission (or mid-year which usually starts in late July each year).

Most Australian undergraduate applicants should submit their online applications through the Universities Admissions Centre if they are not already enrolled at the University of Newcastle (either in an enabling or undergraduate degree) (UAC). Each year, UAC opens enrollment for Semester 1 in April. Early bird enrolment deadlines are in late September.

Applications may still be submitted after the early bird deadline, however, there are additional costs. For further details on closing dates, see UAC Key Dates.
