The application process is self-contained. You can start your application, save your work, and come back whenever you want to finish it. There is no application fee, and for the Fall 2023 entering class, they advise applicants to submit their applications by January 15, 2023. After that, they will take applications on a rolling basis. Students that have specific goals for their graduate studies typically fare better in the admissions process. The strength of both applications could be reduced by submitting more than one in the same year. Application Plan and Deadlines

Highly qualified high school juniors who apply to Carnegie Mellon a year early are eligible for early admission.
It’s best suited for mature, responsible juniors who have finished all of their high school’s course options and the necessary standardized tests.

Please be aware that:

  • Although a high school diploma is not necessary at the time of enrolment, they do advise you to make plans to obtain one by the conclusion of your freshman year at Carnegie Mellon, either a General Education Certificate or a diploma from your high school (GED). Federal financial aid is not available to students without a high school diploma or GED.
  • For information on accommodation, services, and resources available to applicants who will be under the age of 17 on the first day of classes, get in touch with the Dean of Student Affairs Office.
  • To reside on campus, you must be at least 16 years old.

Transfer Admission

As space permits, Carnegie Mellon accepts a few transfer students each year. Please read the dates and guidelines for the transfer application carefully as the transfer policy differs from college to college within Carnegie Mellon.

Additional Requirements

For All Applicants

If accepted, you must prove that you have fulfilled all prerequisites for a real high school diploma by the end of May in the graduating year. By the end of July of the year of matriculation, you must additionally submit an official final transcript, a GED, or a certificate of completion from your local school district or state board of education.

For Home-Schooled Applicants

Along with a list of all textbooks used, you must provide an academic portfolio or transcript that complies with the regulations of your state.

For College of Fine Arts Applicants:

You must schedule a mandatory pre-screen, audition, or portfolio review for the School of Drama or the School of Music. You must submit the necessary portfolio and creative materials for the Schools of Architecture, Art, or Design.

The Common Application is the only one accepted by Carnegie Mellon, and all applications must be submitted online. Before You Apply;

  • Review the College of Fine Arts applicant information if you’re applying to the Schools of Architecture, Art, Design, Drama, and Music.
  • Please be aware that the regular decision application deadline for the schools of drama and music is December 1st.
  • Your application must be submitted when you are at least 13 years old.

After You’ve Applied

The Office of Admission will send you an email confirming receipt of your application one to five business days after you submit your Common Application.
